The counter top is Dekton with waterfall effect and they used a stone veneer for the facing.

Why This Was a Challenging Outdoor Kitchen

At first the homeowner didn’t know what they wanted other than “an outdoor kitchen for big parties” and one that would work within the confines of their existing patio and utility locations.  They eventually agreed on the design we came up with. A 10 x 12 L shaped island that would offer a bar.

It was signed off on and built. And delivered. And half installed… until they decided they wanted to change the design and create another leg.

So for the first time, we had to fabricate on site while the customer continued to make tweaks. Not easy.

What We Would Change About This Outdoor Kitchen

The final placement of the components was decided upon by the homeowner. I would have placed the sink on the middle piece of the island. It is too close to the cooking pieces and I always try to create “hot and cold” zones. They also don’t have a lot of room next to the sink to place dishes or glasses that have been cleaned or need to be cleaned. So the right leg, with the sink, grill and power burner, is too cramped.

By moving the sink to the middle part of the island I would then take the pizza oven (which is not built in so can be moved at will) and place it on a 45 degree angle at the right side bend between the grill side and middle side. Again this follows my design philosophy of separation of temperature zones and minimization of traffic.

I would also move the refrigerator from the middle section to the left side where the bar is. There is enough room on that side for both the refrigerator and the sealed pantry.

My Favorite Outdoor Kitchen of 2024

I love the design of the island (though as noted above I would have moved certain components around) and the colors chosen by the homeowner blend with their patio as well as the exterior of the home. This was a very satisfying job. We worked for a tough customer who is planning on getting alot of use out of this space. With their extended family and frequent parties this space needed to look good, be functional and work within the scope of his existing patio.
